Meet the Doctor
Juan F. Villalona, MD, FAAP
Dr. Villalona was born in the Dominican Republic, and was raised in Rhode Island until his early adolescent years. His family then moved back to the Dominican Republic where he completed Medical School at Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña. Dr. Villalona received his training in general pediatrics at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of the Yeshiva University in the Bronx, New York. He then went on to sub-specialize in pediatric gastroenterology at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York.
After completing his sub-specialty training, he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. Within a short two-year period he accepted a double appointment as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery, and worked as the pediatric hepatologist for the Division of Transplant Surgery while continuing to fulfill his obligations as a pediatric gastroenterologist.
Dr. Villalona has given numerous local, regional, and national lectures. In one of his many roles, he currently serves as the Medical Director for The Gluten Intolerance Group of Richmond (GIGRVA). While at the Medical College of Virginia he had a special interest in interventional endoscopic procedures in pediatric patients.
Dr. Villalona is married to Sara, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, who is a dermatology physician’s assistant currently working in Richmond. They have three sons: Noah, Caleb and Lucas, and two Shetland sheepdogs, Dusty and Teddy. The Villalonas relocated to Richmond in 2006, and have truly enjoyed becoming part of the community.
